Sean Clift, our Diploma teacher, gives us an insight into one of our Diploma of Business (BSB50215) subjects.
“I really enjoy teaching the marketing component within our Diploma course at BROWNS Professional. When most students start the subject they think of marketing as only advertising. It’s really rewarding to see the interest the students take in all of the elements of the Marketing Mix.
The subject covers product and service development, pricing strategies, distribution strategies and a wide range of promotional strategies including social media, mass marketing, product launches, public relations, direct marketing, product sampling and sponsorship.
During our tutorials and practical sessions we look at real case studies, from a range of industries, to analysis some of the world’s most iconic brands including Ray Ban, Qantas, Virgin and Apple. In the practical tutorial sessions the students research how these companies have positioned their products to a targeted market segment. They analyse successful marketing campaigns and promotional strategies from Australia and around the world.
In one of the practical sessions the students take the hypothetical role of the product manager for one of Australia’s most iconic brands to develop a strategy to introduce a new and innovative product line. They develop strategies on product development and packaging ideas as well as a promotional plan for the holiday season. This is a fun group based activity where the students get to use their creative talents and pitch their ideas to the rest of the class.
A number of students in our current Diploma of Business class that are in the process of planning to set up and run their own business. We have been able to tailor their assessments to completely focus on their business plan. Essentially, by the time the students have completed their assessment they will have a complete marketing plan they can use and adapt for their future long term business goals.
We encourage the students to get out of the classroom to see what marketing and promotional strategies local business in the Brisbane CBD. The students have the opportunity to conduct practical market research activities based on the case studies they are working on for their assessment tasks.”
